Sonnies Edge - Love, Death & Robots

Sonnies edge

The sound

The sound is done really well in sonnies edge especially all the sounds for the beasts as they don’t exist in the first place so some thought and research would have gone into what sounds they would have picked for the beasts.

Other battle sounds like the beasts getting chucked about and stabbed and sliced are all done really well and after each sound of a beast getting damaged a proportional sound of pain comes from each beast as when the Turboraptor is stabbed and poked it reacts to the pain by grunting and such as it can take the damage but when Khanivore is stabbed brutally a loud ear piercing screech is heard from the beast allowing us the audience to know that Khanivore is hurt and has been badly injured.

The visuals

The whole scene looks like a mix of grungy and high tech as this is meant to be like an underground dog fighting club instead replaced by beasts controlled by their owners fighting each other to win in a more tech advanced world.

The fight between the beasts is done very brutally and is quite heavy with how the beats are chucked about and seem as if they have their own weight when moving about and fighting adding to the realism and brutality of each beast.

The design of both beasts is also done really well with each beast also being quite fitting with their owner and the abilities each best has with Khanivore being quite sleek, sharp, agile and deadly like Sonnie is and the blade tentacles Sonnie has being used to move about the arena quickly or to do quick and sharp attacks on the Turboraptor and the Turboraptor is very large, strong, armoured and brutal giving it a kind of bad guy look and bully look which resembles the owner really well as he is short tempered and  annoyed when he is loosing. The design also fits in well with its abilities such as the jagged rock shield it has on its left hand or the very sneakily hidden bone blade on the inside of its right hand.

The continuity of the damage done by each beast is done really well with scratches and sliced limbs having continued effects on each beast and the fight itself such as when Khanivore slices some of the armour of Turboraptor and then later uses the open are to attack and deal damage to Turboraptor.

The end of the battle between the two beasts is probably one of my favourite turning points in a fight ever with Khanivore ripping off Turboraptor's right arm. you watching the scene thinking that it will be an easy win for Khanivore but the reveal of the hidden bone blade in Turboraptor's arm is brutal and changes the whole mood of the fight really quickly with the sound suddenly being dampened as Khanivore tentacles are cut and Khanivore is brutally stabbed releasing a loud painful scream that is the only sound we can hear and as we see the blade get pushed even further into Khanivore the scream gets more high pitched leaving us the audience feeling like this is it for the beast until Khanivore opens its eyes and the sound returns to normal and the beast plunges it’s entire head into the neck of Turboraptor killing it and rolling its head off.

I’ve watched this short film a few times now and there’s something about it that keeps me watching it from time to time and I think that comes down to the brutality of the fight and the turning point of both beasts within the battle as these two things are done really well and when first watching it kept me fixed on the fight constantly.
